 Mining Engineer with PM experience required to join a new team working in Dallol, Ethiopia. This place is a hostile working environment so your track record will reflect your success in such. African mining experience is a plus and you will ideally have it in a potash mine or similar solutions mine.

Rotation: You will be expected to spend some time in Israel, Canada, South Africa and then an increasing amount of time on site in Dallol – since this is one of the hottest places on earth you MUST have African and/or hostile environment experience. You may have a base in Addis Ababa, depending on the demands of the job. This role is not really suitable for a family as there is limited camp site accommodation or in Addis.

Experience: You will have many years experience in such a role with a similar multi-million dollar mining project.

You must have Project Management experience in potash, ideally in solution mining of potash.

This is an operational role, not a “green field” project and your track record should reflect this. You will be a key member of the operational team, reporting directly to the Operations Director, and may be required to work some times in Israel (at the H.O. there) or in Canada, as well as out of Addis Ababa and at the mine site itself.

The basic engineering phase is now nearly concluded and you will be leading the detailed Engineering and the move to EPC/EPCM Management.

Our client is developing a potash mine in Dallol, Ethiopia and requires a Senior Cost Engineer; Project Cost Engineer/Analyst, to join a new team for this exciting large-scale project. Please note we are the sole retained agents and all applications must be made through us – direct approaches will not be welcome or considered. You will need to be able to start quickly.

Your duties and skills demanded are:

• Prepare various CPA (Capital Project Authorization) funding requests at different stages of the project, ensuring completeness and consistency of format as may be directed by corporate management from time-to-time
• Ensure alignment of project scope and funding at all stages of the project
• Break out project estimates as appropriate to reflect the project execution strategy
• Prepare detailed commitment, expenditure and cumulative liability curves for management review and approval. Monitor and report actual status against same on a regular basis
• Review and approve all proposed project commitments, ensuring comparison with estimated “should-cost”. Identify and explain any variances for management approval.
• Track and monitor all project commitments, ensuring correct cost coding, currency translation etc…
• Attend miscellaneous project review, co-ordination and report-out meetings and take a proactive role identification and highlighting of (a) deviations from agreed project scope and (b) potential cost savings
• Participate in and help drive value engineering exercises from time-to-time as agreed with program management
• Ensure all deviations from agreed project scope (or other changed conditions) are expeditiously processed as “proposed changes / construction changes of scope”, so that they may be presented to management for additional funding (or otherwise dispensed with)
• Ensure that NO commitments of company funds are made UNLESS appropriate funding is in place (by way of original CPA approval or subsequent BCOS (Budget change of scope) / CPA amendment approval)
• Review A/E and CM approaches to estimating, cost engineering and cost control (processes, systems and people)
• Continually review outstanding “yet-to-buy” scope and funding to ensure alignment and maximize accuracy and predictability of project cost forecasts
• Working with the head office company system, your team leads the A/E, CM and other third party participants, ensure regular monthly detailed cost workgroup meetings are held to review all aspects of commitments, expenditures, and yet-to-buys are reviewed and agreed.
• Develop monthly project cost reports, including details of all budgets, commitments, expenditures, yet-to-buys and forecasts. Include details of all variances between budget and current forecast, and variances from previous to current forecast
• Working with the project scheduler, QS, contracts, and other project management team members, ensure that all potential claims are highlighted and addressed on an ongoing basis. Ensure incorporation of same in monthly project cost reports.
• Liase with, and as necessary, direct the work of any associate accountants assigned to the project
• Review and supervise the work of any cost engineer/analyst assigned to the project.

In simple terms our client requires someone with +10 years’ experience in leading as an Engineering Manager, on projects of typically 3-5 yrs duration, $1-2B in value and located in some of the most difficult areas of the world. Your skills and engineering knowledge are a given for these roles, nor is it vital to have potash experience, so long as you fully understand the challenges and difficulties in implementing this project in NE Ethiopia – the heat especially!

Location:             Based mostly at the Dallol field camp in Ethiopia, with an office in Addis Ababa/Israel.

The Mission:      Initially the role will be to assist recruiting the engineering team, then Stage Two will be to manage the project through Basic Design, detailed design through to commissioning and initial operation.

Project and Job Function:       This is an immediate requirement for an Engineering Manager to run a four year project to build a potash mine. There will be a tarmac road for the 600kms to the port of Djibouti where the Chinese are building port facilities. The successful candidate will essentially manage a construction project – their first task is to build a process plant, including evaporation ponds, solution wells, water wells, a piping network for several wells and so on. They will take the lead regarding all engineering aspects and engineering contract aspects working with the ICL Allana Project team and Engineers and reporting to the Project Manager on site.

The successful candidate will be part of the recruiting process for key remaining engineering orientated staff (see our list below).

Duties will include but are not limited to engineering, design, surveying, ground control, environment and construction.  This person will also provide technical engineering support for all mining functions including capital planning, OpEx and equipment requirements.  KPI’s are to be negotiated and will be agreed on employment.


  • Be instrumental in driving the FEED study
  • Be instrumental in evaluating the different contract options available for the project and selecting the most appropriate (EPC, EPCM etc)
  • Be a key driver liaising with equipment vendors to ensure correct equipment specification and design.
  • Select, develop and lead an effective engineering team to achieve planned objectives, and develop goals with subordinates to ensure consistent overall effectiveness and efficiency.
  • Mentor direct reports and assure high performance is achieved by ensuring that work and roles are understood, by motivating direct reports to reach their maximum potential, by providing constructive feedback on a regular basis, and by managing performance issues.
  • Lead in the development of new technologies and techniques and in modifying existing equipment and systems to improve operating efficiency. Identify new ideas and solutions, make recommendations and create implementation plans.
  • Advise on capital and new equipment selection.
  • Manage safety audits and risk assessments to ensure regulatory, corporate and site safety and environmental standards are adhered to.
  • Ensure all projects are evaluated to ensure that any hazards will be minimized through project design parameters.
  • Identify unsafe or harmful practices and seek to create a safe work atmosphere and aid environmental awareness, protection and restoration.
  • Ensure effective communication and interactions with regulatory agencies and third party stakeholders.


  • Must have major contract/construction experience – multi billion Dollar experience
  • Bachelor Degree in Engineering
  • May be Mechanical or Electrical Engineer with demonstrable engineering skills.
  • Professional Engineering Registration, ie. Chartered.
  • Min 10 years experience in the major project construction industry including at least 5 years in leadership.
  • Potash or similar salt experience would be advantageous
  • African experience
  • Strong teamwork and communication skills.

Reporting to:     The Project Director (UK based) and the newly appointed Project Manager (on site).

Experience required:

  • Experienced in pre-development work and construction.
  • Must have African experience & tolerance of hostile working environments (Dallol is one of the hottest places on earth)
  • An exceptional candidate from a Project Management or Construction background (not necessarily a mining background) will be considered.
  • Will have operational and organizational experience.
  • Most likely to be employed at present and ideally but not necessarily will have built a potash mine (or similar salt based operation) before.

Personal Qualities:

  • Must speak good English
  • Will be of practical orientation to balance the team’s in-depth scientific experience.
  • People skills are vital as will be managing multi-national staff.
  • A self-starter, as will be initiating project.
  • You will have an understanding of local sensitivities and issues.

Major Project Planner / Scheduler Ref: ICL2162 – This role has now been filled, please do not apply

In simple terms our client requires someone with +10 years’ experience in leading as a Senior Project Planner, on projects of typically 3-5 yrs duration, $1-2B in value and located in some of the most difficult areas of the world. Your skills and level of planning knowledge are a given, nor is it vital to have potash experience, so long as you fully understand the challenges and difficulties in implementing this type of project in NE Ethiopia.


•Required to create basic and detailed plans for the benefit of multidisciplinary projects (EPC well as Design & Supply), and quotations.
•Required to develop & update schedules activities, including construction site activities & capture the critical path.
•Responsible for instructing and supervising department managers in establishing/updating resource planning.
•Require to collect additional technical information in order to plan accurate.
•Responsible for identifying problem areas and report it to the responsible project managers/department managers.


•Technical training at college level, supplemented by vocational courses.
•Extensive knowledge of Primavera and preferably MS Projects Server.  Primavera P6 is likely to be needed
•Broad knowledge and understanding of project management and multidisciplinary engineering and contracting activities.
•Good verbal and written communication skills in English and preferably a second foreign language.
•Extensive experience (> 10 years) in the planning of multidisciplinary EPC projects for the benefit of the heavy process industries.
•Demonstrable affinity with instruct and supervise others in the field of planning.
•Willing to travel internationally – ETHIOPIA/Djibouti/ISRAEL is a minimum.

Potassium sulfate is not abundant and is definitely not in a mine-capacity over-supply situation. We are urgently looking for a Package Manager with project experience for our client, South Africa’s only producer of refined copper which provides the local market with 85% of its copper requirements. You must be strong on Electrical & Instrumentation and have good management skills. The Contract duration will be one year and salary package is within the range of the D4 Patterson Grade ie. Our Retained Client, Paragon Diamonds, who on May 5th 2015 signed a MoU to take over the 75% stake of a diamond mine in Lesotho, have now just gained Ministerial approval to Licence and develop their mine in Lesotho. Accordingly, they are looking for a range of second tier Management (Assistant Head of Department), to report into the newly appointed COO for their new project. This is a new and lean company, so the prospects for advancement are very good. Please see our post “Recent News on our Clients” for full details.

This mine is scheduled to go into production Q1, 2015 and your contract will therefore be for 6 months, to be extended as appropriate depending on performance. This is a lean business which will be run as a commercially profitable business. You won’t require a large bureaucracy and will be used to using your initiative, being trusted and responsible.

1. Geologist:  Job Ref. SA2151

A Senior Geologist is required 2016 for our Retained Client, Paragon Diamonds, in Lesotho. Must have a background in kimberlite/diamond mining (and NOT just gold or other mineral, though SOME more diverse experience in your career is acceptable) and ideally in African mining over some ten years, so you are unlikely to be under age 30. You will be a Senior Geologist already, ideally in a company within South Africa to allow ease of relocation, though this is not a bar to ex-pats further afield.

A Lesotho citizen or an ex pat looking to return to Lesotho is the first choice but all applicants with relevant diamond mining and African experience will be considered.

This mine is scheduled to commence production of 500,000 MT p.a. end Q1 2016  lasting 18 months and your contract will therefore be for 6 months, to be extended depending on performance by then but this is anticipated to be a permanent role. The mine is slated to then achieve a scale of 3MT p.a. thereafter.

You will be familiar with software packages such as GEMS and Surpac, have more than 8 year’s post University experience, and be good with daily reports (eg stockpile reports etc).

As the Senior Site / Production Geologist you will be expected to take a management role and stand in for the Admin Manager, Project Manager or the COO for short periods (5 – 10 days).
Based:  Lesotho for a min 20 days a month on a 20/10 rota (a married contract on site/residence not preferred but could be accepted).

Duties / Functions of the position will be :

  • Create and maintain a safe working environment for the team.
  • Access and identify hazards and risks in the workplace and take preventive actions.

Our client, a major and respected gold miner with several operations across Portugal and in Europe, is  seeking a field Geologist to join their existing team, particularly a young, moderately experienced free-thinking (ie. not set in “big company” ways) geologist.

This would be a great opportunity for a junior geologist who is already in Portugal, or who wishes to return to Portugal, to make the next step into a senior role and will suit those with five or more years of experience in the field. The successful candidate will show an ability to think laterally, be able to work on his/her own and bring initiative and a flair to their work.  This is not a role for those that wish to sit behind a desk and calculate models, but rather they will face tough environments and daily field work and bear a lot of responsibility. The salary (paid in Euros) will be commensurately rewarding.

Our ideal would be about 8 years of field experience in a variety of exploration and near-mine exploration sorts of jobs, with a variety of companies having worked in Portugal, Spain, Angola, and other such countries, in Europe and further abroad.

It’s important that the candidate has good field and communication skills and is open-minded, a self-starter, etc. Must speak/write Portuguese and English. Must be field-oriented with basic computer skills, but no real interest in being a sit-in-the-office computer geologist. It doesn’t really matter where you live, though preference will be in South Portugal, as much of the company’s up-coming work will be in the south.  If the geologist gets assigned to a hard project, then there will be basic project housing during work times.  Field expenses (basic food and lodging) will be provided of course, as will a company vehicle for work times.

Portugal, despite the economic turmoil within the Eurozone is a nice place to work and a safe country for mining, and is very people-friendly. It is a great place to raise children – the Portuguese love children and there is a good education system, not to mention an equitable climate and plenty of sunshine. Although this role might best suit a single person due to the initial high amount of field work, looking forward it would be a useful first step in a career in mining geology with our client company that will prove to be more family-friendly than many other such roles eg. in Mali, Algeria, Ethiopia and Sudan, to name but a few trouble spots right now!

Thorough knowledge of mine disaster management and emergency preparedness including fire, hazardous chemicals and substances.·
Thorough knowledge of all phases of mine operations including mine construction and projects.·
Proven record of meeting and exceeding operational objectives.·
Proven ability to manage large diverse multinational workforce and contractor groups within a developing mine context. (African experience considered essential)·

The Client

TiZir Limited is a 50/50 Joint Venture company owned by Mineral Deposits Limited, an ASX200 company, and Eramet, a French major mining and processing company. The Joint Venture (a UK incorporated entity) will mine mineral sands on the coast of Senegal in West Africa, some of which will be shipped to the company’s 100% owned smelter in Norway. The Senegalese operating company is Grande Cote Operations SA (CGO) of which the Senegal Government owns a 10% stake holding.

The operation is dredging a 100km mobile coastal dune system in a very lightly populated area. The dredge face is approximately 10 metres high and the dredge will be advancing at the rate of 20 metres per day so mobile anchors will be used. It will be the largest dredging operation of its kind.

GCO wishes to engage a Chief Operating Officer to manage all of the operational affairs of the project, from the dredge face to the ship loader at the port. The COO will be the most senior position within GCO and will report to the CEO of TiZir Ltd and ultimately to the TiZir Board. There is a Senegal Country Manager already in place whose role is to work with the COO to ensure smooth liaison with Government officials and local authorities.

The COO will have African or at least developing world experience, and strong communication and cultural skills in order to deal with multiple nationalities. A Mineral Sands background is preferred but not essential, as are French language skills.
